Assignments provide you with the chance to demonstrate your understanding and lay the groundwork for further improvement.

Discover the various assignment types employed at the Lumina Open University in the following sections.

Types of Assessments

At the beginning of your module, you will have access to its specific assessment guide, providing detailed instructions
for each assignment.

You can be confident that you'll have a module tutor available to assist you with your studies. If you have any questions
about an assignment, they are there to lend you a helping hand.

Various forms of assessment will be employed during your studies. Here's a brief overview of the types you might encounter:

Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs)

  • Typically, you will encounter several of these assignments within each module.
  • Each of these assignments can take the form of an essay, a set of questions, a skills test, a speaking assessment, or another format that enables you to demonstrate your acquired knowledge.
  • Each assignment will come with its own submission deadline.
  • Upon receiving the graded assignments from your tutor, you will receive comprehensive feedback highlighting areas for improvement.

Interactive Computer-Marked Assignments (iCMAs)

  • Typically, these will be accessible a few weeks prior to the deadline date.
  • They are consistently submitted online.
  • They are typically assessed by a computer, although your tutor may also be responsible for marking them. Register for Exams

End-of-Module Assessments (EMAs)/End-of-Module Tutor-Marked Assignments (emTMAs)

  • These serve as the ultimate, assessed pieces of work in certain modules.
  • They might resemble the TMAs you've completed within the module but are typically more extensive pieces of work.
  • They generally encompass the entire module rather than focusing on a specific part of it.
  • The deadline for your EMA/emTMA will always be set and unchangeable.
  • If your module includes an EMA or emTMA, you typically won't have an additional exam.

Exams

  • Exams are the final assessed task on some modules. If your module has an exam, you won’t normally have an EMA as well.
  • The date for your exam will be predetermined.
  • Exams are typically conducted remotely, allowing you to complete them at home or another designated location. If a module necessitates a face-to-face exam, this information will be explicitly stated in the module description.
  • If your personal circumstances or a disability are expected to affect your capability to take the exam remotely, we may
consider implementing alternative arrangements or reasonable adjustments. It is essential to discuss this with your Student Support Team.

On-site Learning Sessions

  • Only a select few modules incorporate residential schools. While attendance at some residential schools is mandatory for passing the module, others are elective.
  • The majority of our on-site learning sessions occur in Nigeria, and you will be responsible for organizing your own transportation to the venue.
  • Under specific circumstances, if attending a residential school is not feasible, we may provide an online alternative learning experience as an option.
  • The module description will indicate whether or not it incorporates a residential school.
  • If you have any apprehensions about participating in a residential school, we suggest you communicate with us or before the commencement of your module.
